Making the Move

Making the Move

Moving your loved one away from their cherished home and into assisted living is a major life event and one of the biggest adjustments they will make in their older years. It’s impossible to completely remove the anxieties and worries that come with this move, but there are some guiding steps you can take to help ease the transition for both you and your loved one.

1 Prepare for the Transition:

Involve them in the decision. If possible, include your loved one in the process of choosing an assisted living facility. Site visits and discussions about amenities can help them feel more in control.

Address concerns and fears. Acknowledge and validate any feelings of sadness, loss, or fear associated with the move. Discuss potential benefits like increased social interaction, access to care, and safety.

Create a moving plan. Work with the assisted living community to create a plan that includes packing, moving, and unpacking services. This can help alleviate stress and ensure a smoother transition.

2 Personalize Their Space:

Familiar items. Bring familiar furniture, decorations, and personal belongings to make the new space feel like home.

Photos and sentimental items. Display photos and cherished objects to evoke positive memories and create a comforting atmosphere.

3 Stay Involved and Connected:

Regular visits. Continue to visit your loved one regularly, especially in the initial weeks, to offer support and reassurance.

Communication. Establish a communication schedule to stay in touch and share updates.

Encourage participation. Help them get involved in activities and events at the community to foster a sense of belonging and build new friendships.

Connect with staff. Introduce your loved one to the staff and other residents to help them feel more comfortable and integrated.

4 Offer Emotional Support:

Active listening: Listen to their concerns and offer words of encouragement and support.

Positive reinforcement: Focus on the positive aspects of assisted living and highlight the benefits they will experience.

Be patient: Understand that adjusting to a new environment takes time. Offer ongoing support and understanding throughout the transition.
