We know that you have questions about us and are careful in deciding which senior care facility to place your loved one or yourself. Here are some questions and answers that will help you know more about Oasis Senior Living and how we can be your home away from home.
Q What options are available for senior housing?
A In order of increasing levels of service provided, senior housing options can generally be categorized as follows:
Independent Living – Staff available 24/7 to assist in the event of an emergency. Meal preparation, housekeeping, and property maintenance are included. At Oasis Cottages for Independent Living, we offer weekly manicures, a hair stylist on-site, a podiatrist for general foot care, and an activity every weekday. Residents in our Cottages generally enjoy a high level of independence accompanied with the peace of mind that someone is always available to help and other seniors are around to provide social interaction.
Assisted Living – Trained caregivers (usually licensed certified nursing assistants) available on-site 24/7 to provide assistance with activities of daily living (or ADLs) including medication administration, bathing, dressing, incontinence assistance, meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, monitoring, etc. Residents with dementia typically do well in an assisted living facility with 24/7 monitoring unless they present a significant wander risk.
Memory Care – Sometimes called “secure unit” or “Alzheimer’s facility”, Memory Care facilities offer a secure environment for those who have significant dementia and present a serious wander risk.
Skilled Nursing – Medical personnel available 24/7 (typically registered nurses) who can provide medical services. Often residents at Skilled Nursing facilities are bedridden and completely unable to transfer or ambulate. Skilled Nursing facilities are appropriate for people with acute medical needs but are no longer eligible for a hospital stay. Oasis Senior Living is not licensed to provide Skilled Nursing.
Q How do I know which facility is most appropriate for me or how do I qualify for one facility vs another?
A Our registered nurse will conduct an assessment to determine the appropriate type of care. She can come to your home to conduct the assessment, which takes approximately 30 minutes.
Q Does Oasis Senior Living offer private rooms with private bathrooms?
A Yes. Oasis Senior Living offers private rooms with private bathrooms at its assisted living and memory care facilities. The independent living facility at The Cottages offers private “cottages” with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a full kitchen, living room, and an attached single-car garage.
Q Is there a price difference? If so, what is the cost of the various facilities?
A Yes, there is a cost difference depending on the type of facility. The Independent Living Cottages are the cheapest, and the Memory Care facility is the most expensive. For current pricing, please contact us.
Q Is there any type of financial aid available, or will my insurance pay some of the cost?
A Yes. Both Medicaid and the VA have programs that help pay for a portion of the cost. In addition, private long-term care policies cover some or all of the cost of these types of facilities. Medicare or other types of health insurance do not pay for the costs of long-term care such as independent living, assisted living, and memory care facilities. Please contact us to discuss eligibility and options.
Q If I am qualified to receive financial assistance from either Medicaid or the VA, is Oasis Senior Living approved to participate in these programs?
A Yes. We have several residents who are currently receiving aid from either Medicaid or the VA or both. In addition, we work with residents who have long-term care policies in making their claims and qualifying for payments.
Q Do we take smokers?
A Yes, but smoking is not allowed in the facility. Arrangements can be made to smoke outside, though.
Q Do we take people who can’t walk?
A Yes, in a level 1 home, if they can transfer themselves, or, in a level 2 home, if one person can transfer them.
Q Do we have a nurse on staff?
A No, but if nursing services are needed, a doctor can order home health to come into the home.
